Nostalgic Nights: Gospel Quartet Concerts at the Whiting Auditorium
A Harmonious Journey Through Southern Gospel Music in the Late 1980s
In the late 1980s, my friend Peter and I embarked on a musical journey that would leave a lasting impression on our lives. We frequently attended gospel quartet concerts at the Whiting Auditorium in Flint, Michigan. These concerts became the highlights of our year, showcasing some of the most renowned national gospel groups alongside our cherished local talent.
The Cathedral Quartet often headlined these events, mesmerizing us with their powerful harmonies and soulful performances. Sharing the stage with them were other legendary groups such as the Speer Family, the Kingsmen, the Kingsboys, the Hinsons, the Singing Americans, and occasionally, the Happy Goodman Family. Each group brought its unique style and energy, creating an unforgettable experience for all in attendance.
One of the most special moments for us was hearing our own church quartet, the Cornerstone Quartet, perform. The group featured talented individuals: Julie Caery, Debbie Caery, Ron Kinney, and my good friend Jed Sparling, with Dawn Edwards on piano. Their heartfelt renditions of gospel classics resonated deeply with the audience, adding a personal touch to the concerts.
Growing up, my love for southern gospel music was nurtured by listening to old reel-to-reel recordings of groups like the Imperials, with Jake Hess, Gary McSpadden, and Armond Morales, as well as the Happy Goodman Family and others. These early influences shaped my appreciation for the genre and its rich history.
Someone once asked Elvis Presley who his favorite singer was, and he responded, "Jake Hess." I couldn't agree more. Jake Hess was a pioneer in gospel music, introducing a modern sound that incorporated more than just the traditional piano and bass or electric guitar. He brought in an incredible blend of vibraphones, organs, drums, and sometimes strings. I had the great pleasure of personally meeting him a short time before he died, an experience that further deepened my admiration for his contributions to gospel music.
As I reminisce about those magical nights at the Whiting Auditorium, I am filled with gratitude for the memories and the music that have enriched my life. The gospel quartet concerts of the late 1980s were more than just performances.
